Why has dancing become less complex with time?
If you look at history, todays “dancing” resembles ancient tribal stuff. Why is it that with time real dancing has been replaced with simple hip movements and shakes? How did society go from the Charleston and Swing to grinding and whatever you call when shuffle around to techno music?
That may be true of social dancing, but dancing in the arts have become more complex and require ever greater skills then ever before. Ballet now compared to a couple of hundred years ago and even compared to pre-Baryshnikov has become more complex and demanding. Contemporary concert dance as well.
Social dance is about mating. The more restrictive the society the less primitive the dancing is. The Charleston was considered quite racy in it’s day compared to the dancing that went before it. The idea of someone doing a shimmy and shaking their bodies like that was considered sinful by many of the older and “God fearing” people. It is all what you are used to seeing.
